Learning a foreign language is a liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other societies and contributes to a sense of wholeness, an understanding of your rights and responsibilities as a global citizen and encourages tolerance and empathy of other cultures. French is the language chosen at Cumnor, due to local links with the French city of Grenoble and a wealth of staff and community expertise in this area. It is one of two languages taught at the local secondary school.
We intend to deliver a high-quality languages education that fosters pupils’ curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world. Language teaching should provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries should they choose, far beyond their time at Cumnor School.
The curriculum follows the statutory requirements for the National Curriculum and has emphasis on spoken language. The progression maps are currently being further developed.
